As the summer season comes to an end, properly preparing your pool for winter is essential to protect both its structure and equipment.
Depending on how the pool is used and the requirements of each installation, there are two main options: the pool can remain in operation with a reduced maintenance schedule or be taken out of operation for the winter months.
In either case, it is recommended to keep the pool filled with water throughout the winter. Keeping water in the pool helps minimize the effects that significant temperature fluctuations may have on its structure.
1. Keeping Your Pool in Operation During Winter
If you choose to keep your pool in operation, it does not need to run as intensively as it does during the summer months. However, regular water and equipment checks remain essential.
For winter pool maintenance:
- Set the pump to operate for approximately 4 hours per day.
- Check the water’s chemical balance every 15 days.
- Clean the filter and pre-filter every 15 days.
- Continue adding the necessary pool chemicals according to the recommended dosages.
Following these steps helps keep both the pool water and equipment in good condition throughout the period of reduced use.
2. Taking Your Pool Out of Operation
If the pool will not be used at all during the winter, it can be taken out of operation. In this case, it is important to follow the correct winterization procedure.
Water Preparation
Adjust the pH level to 6.8 to help slow down the formation of deposits and algae.
Then, lower the water level by approximately 20–25 cm, leaving sufficient capacity for winter rainfall.
Cleaning the Pool
Before closing the pool, clean it thoroughly, paying particular attention to the waterline, where dirt and deposits tend to accumulate.
Shutting Down and Protecting the Equipment
Turn the main switch to the OFF position and switch off the corresponding circuit breakers on the electrical panel.
Close all inlet and outlet valves, properly disconnect the pump and store it in a dry, protected area. During the period of inactivity, rotate the pump impeller 2–3 times to help prevent it from seizing.
If your pool has a cartridge filter, clean it thoroughly and store it in a dry place as well.
Finally, add 1 litre of winter algaecide per 30 m³ of water, distributing it directly around the perimeter of the pool.
Is a Winter Pool Cover Necessary?
Using a suitable winter pool cover is highly recommended.
A pool cover helps prevent leaves, dust and other debris from entering the water, making pool maintenance during the winter—and preparation for the next swimming season—significantly easier.
Professional Winter Pool Closing & Maintenance
The appropriate winterization procedure may vary depending on the type of pool, its equipment and the individual installation. For this reason, particularly when electrical or mechanical equipment needs to be disconnected and protected, the process should be carried out by a qualified professional.
The Piscinity team provides professional pool preparation and maintenance for the winter months, helping protect the pool water, structure and equipment until the next swimming season.
